Do you have any other version of office or outlook locally installed on the base image?

I was having the same problem all the time before with Office Pro Plus, Visio, Project, and Lync 2013 and it was because I opened MS office before closing the appstack.  You can't open any MS office apps during the provisioning process or it could cause activation issues after.

Also, you have to use the "cscript ossp.vbs /sethst:<fqdn>" command using the FQDN of your KMS server before closing the appstack for the first time.

However, even after following those guidelines, I still see the problem you're describing 5% of the time users log in...

VDP 6.1 compatibility with ESXi 4.1U2

I have ESXi 4.1U2 and want to deploy VDP. As per vmware compatibility matrix, VDP6.1 is not compatible with ESXi 4.1U2. However I still wanted to to give it a try in lab environment. I could install VDP successfully on ESXi 4.1U2 and VDP summary page shows: "Compatibility: ESX/ESXi 4.0 and later (VM version 7)". This has confused me. So are ESXi 4.1 and VDP 6.1 are compatible or not?

The value is that you can have a host go down and have the VM keep running.  I'm assuming you have a 3 node cluster.  VM is on host 1, witness on host 2, data on host 3 with FTT = 0.  If host 2 or 3 go down, you won't have quorum and your VM on host 1 will become unresponsive.  You will need to wait for the crashed host to come back online before you can get the VM running.  Assuming you don't have data corruption.  If you did, you would need to go to backup.

It's also handy for maintenance.  How would you install patches on host 2 or 3?

With FTT = 1 You might have VM running on host 1 along with a copy of the data, host 2 with a witness, and host 3 with the second copy of the data.  Now any of the host can crash and you still have quorum.

Agreed on the amount of storage it takes.  In v6 you can do RAID 5/6 which takes up less, but you need more hosts.  If you go all flash vSAN, you get compression and dedupe.

There is a default storage policy.  FTT = 1, stripe width = 1, thin provision, etc...  You need to manually create others.  You can then apply them to VMs, or make it default and then new VMs will get the policy at creation.

Thank you, Zach.

Okay, that makes sense. Thank you for the clarification.

Deploy the VDP successfully does not mean that it will work and like you see on the Interoperability Matrix, VDP 6.1 does not support ESXi 4.x.

See what VMware says on Admin Guide found here: http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vmware-data-protection-administration-guide-61.pdf

Software Requirements VDP 6.1 requires the following software:

 vCenter server 5.5 or later

VDP 6.1 supports the Linux-based vCenter server virtual appliance and the Windows-based vCenter server.

 vSphere web client

The following link provides information about current vSphere web browser support:

     https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.install.doc%2FGUID-F 6D456D7-C559-439D-8F34-4FCF533B7B42.html&resultof=%22web%22%20%22client%22

Web browsers must be enabled with Adobe Flash Player 11.3 or later to access the vSphere web client and VDP functionality.

 vSphere host 5.0 or later

Ok, that clarifies thing.

You are right, with the same port group names (note that the names are case-sensitive) the destination should be pre-populated.

Does this happen with the Windows based vSphere Client too?

Which version/build of vCenter and ESXi do you use?

This is all latest stuff - 6.0 U2, just updated few days ago.

If RVTools doesn't list snapshots, there are none.

What you may do next is to run ls -lisa in each of the VM's folders to check whether the virtual disks are still thin provisioned. This command will not only show the provisioned size, but also the used space in kB. If both - the used space, and the provisioned size - match, then the .vmdk shouldn't grow anymore.

Hi Darcyz,

Thanks for the reply.  Have you tried out this combination yourself?

Hi Suhag79,

thanks for your answer. Yes, I tried that and based on results from this compatibility matrix I think that neither of CPUs Xeon E5-2620v4, Xeon E5-2680v4, Xeon E5-2630v3, Xeon E5-2695v3 are compatible with vSphere 5.1 U3. But I have received reply from Hewlett Packard (HP) that at least CPUs Xeon E5-2630v3, Xeon E5-2695v3 supports vSphere 5.1. So I wanted to be really sure and have confirmation also from other experienced guys, like you. I simply think that HP is wrong.

You're not trying to access it via NAT I assume? The expectation is that if you've deployed a NAT topology, you should be accessing it via NAT. If you want to access the native address, you should be using a routed topology.

Also you say about replacing the .vmdk and .vmx file, i do this after the clone is created?

Edit the .vmx file this before starting the clone. Then use the "Clone from ... The current state ..." option, and in the following screen select a full clone.

That would mean it's not in the $pgs array, and the VM with that portgroup should show up from the report.
