Cannot add datastore if VM are powered On

$

Hi to all.

I've an infrastructure with 2 hosts (Esxi 6upd2 and Esxi 5.1upd2) .

ESXi with 5.1 version has 2 datastores mounted with VMs powered ON  (ESXi 6 does not have datastore [fresh install])

From ESXi 6 upd2 I tried to Mount (Keep the existing signature) one of the datastores and i cannot Mount it (An unresolved VMFS volume with signature 5135cc26-5a43cc6d-34c7-0025b5990306 has been detected on this disk.) (From GUI)

This is output of esxcfg-volume -l command (VMs powered ON):

esxcfg-volume -l

VMFS UUID/label: 5135cc26-5a43cc6d-34c7-0025b5990306/VNX-233
Can mount: Yes
Can resignature: No (the volume is being actively used)
Extent name: naa.600601605282380055bbcaca6beae411:1     range: 0 - 204543 (MB)

VMFS UUID/label: 51114083-e163a38d-1a60-0025b5990307/VNX-232
Can mount: Yes
Can resignature: No (the volume is being actively used)
Extent name: naa.600601605282380053bbcaca6beae411:1     range: 0 - 204543 (MB)

Now if one the datastores has the VMs powered OFF, i can Mount without format the datastores (From GUI)

This is output of esxcfg-volume -l command (VMs powered OFF):

esxcfg-volume -l

VMFS UUID/label: 5135cc26-5a43cc6d-34c7-0025b5990306/VNX-233
Can mount: Yes
Can resignature: Yes
Extent name: naa.600601605282380055bbcaca6beae411:1     range: 0 - 204543 (MB)

VMFS UUID/label: 51114083-e163a38d-1a60-0025b5990307/VNX-232
Can mount: Yes
Can resignature: No (the volume is being actively used)

Extent name: naa.600601605282380053bbcaca6beae411:1     range: 0 - 204543 (MB)

Why this behavior ???

Thanks to all for the explations.

(sorry for my imperfect english)

Join a SSO or create a new SSO

Hello

I am installing Vcenter server 6 on a vm windows server on a new host in my environment. I have an existing vm vcenter v5.5 on an other host that we will be removing. We have upgraded hosts and SAN and retiring old. Should I join SSO to the other vcenter or create a new? The old Vcenter 5.5 will no longer be used after migration. So I am unsure if the slave will become the master after removal. Or since in doubt, create a new and have that run on its own and recreate permissions.

I'm not e exactly sure what's causing this, but what should work is to manually clone the virtual disk.

To do this create a folder on the target disk/partition and then run:

vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r "C:\Daily VMs\Win7 64bit HW\Win7 64bit-cl1-000019.vmdk" -t 1 "X:\destfolder\Win7 64bit - HW.vmdk"

(replace X:\destfolder with the destination folder you created)

The vmware-vdiskmanager.exe command line utility is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation

Once the cloning process is done, copy the VM's .vmx and .vmxf files to the destination folder, and replace the virtual disk's name in the .vmx file to "Win7 64bit HW.vmdk".

Now "Remove" the old VM from VMware Workstation's inventory (do NOT delete the old VM yet), and add the new one (File -> Open ...). When you start the cloned VM for the first time, a question whether you moved or copied the VM may pop up. In this case the answer should be "I moved it". This will retain the VM's UUID and MAC address.

SRM requires licenses for each protected VM. If you only have protected VMs at one site, you only need the license there. If you have your vCenters in linked mode or enhanced linked mode (joined to the same SSO domain) then they will share licenses and you won't have to move them between sites as you move your VMs.

Hi,

No, I'm not resuming a vm, it's just the power on (normal turn on).

Also there is no files that you've mentioned, no vmss files.

But, the error show up a few second after a normal delay for startup application, here's the following error prompt.

Thanks

;). yes normally Sas is default for 2012. me personally using pvscsi. better performance .

So if you go live - good to check vmxnet3 and pvscsi

You could check Vmware Matrix for guest Os

vRA 7 Catalog Item Request - Restrict Deployment Field

$

Hello everyone - with some of the changes that came since vRA 7.0 is every catalog item request is being treated as part of Deplyoment, and as such the request contains Description and Instance Count for the deployment as well as the child machine parameters. We have a restriction on the number of instances for the blueprint. However, people can still change the Deployment count instance and defats the restriction we put in place. Is there any way to hard limit this to 1 or some max field. We're running vRA 7.0.1. Thanks for your inputs.

Having the same issue, updated, new install of 16.04, I do have secure boot enabled and want to keep it that way.  Thus, I have not tested without secure boot.

Hi,

same here.

Is there already a solution for that?

I think a fresh install will not solve this issue.

Thanks JO

Re: Local datastore slowly diminishing (ESXi 4.1)

From what I could see in the screen shots, it seems that the virtual disks have been inflated already, i.e. the second column (size in kB) is the same as the size in Bytes (left to the date/time). Not sure what else might eat up the disk space. How much additional disk space is being consumed each day, and what's the free space on the datastore?

ha also here. Painfully.

very bad once vdp needs to recreated from scratch.

As needing to delete annotation Values. And then add again all vms manually again to get new ID.

Hope vmware provide API or and input list.

Supporting lot of vms without automization is horrible in Case of refreshments.

Io ho disinstallato la KB3142024 (per win 2008R2) e non mi è più apparso il problema.

Welcome to the Community,

you can downgrade the license v6 keys to v5 in your My VMware portal, and later - when you decide to upgrade the environment - upgrade the keys again.

Re: Change the name of files and folders in datastores

I have had to do this a few times so will try to document the process I followed.  If you have numerous datastores then make a note of which datastore the machine sits in.  The next step is to unregister the VM from vCenter / ESXi

Then you need to enable SSH on your ESXi host

Use Putty or something similar to connect to the ESXi host

Run the following commands (in italics)

cd /vmfs/volumes/<datastore name> ie if the datastore containing the VM is named datastore1 then you would run cd /vmfs/volumes/datastore1

Next run ls to check that the VM folder is there

Rename the folder using mv <oldVMFoldername> <newVMFoldername>

Change into the folder with cd <NewVMFoldername>

Rename the nvram, vmsd, vmx and <VMname-xxxx.hlog> files by running mv again ie

mv oldname.nvram newname.nvram

mv oldname.vmsd newname.vmsd

mv oldname.vmx newname.vmx

mv oldname-1234.hlog newname-1234.hlog

Rename the vmdk file with vmkfstools -E oldname.vmdk newname.vmdk

Edit the vmx file with vi newname.vmx

Change the references from oldname to newname within this file

Register the VM with the ESXi server and it should power on ok

Hi Max,

is that an official solution from the VMware Support?

Can you try to click the extend button again after you have extended your disk?

Will you get the error again?

I think a fresh install will not help if you will extend your disk once again.....

Thanks JO
