Hello,

is it possible to use the datastore space of each available node in vCenter?

Or should we not write anything in these datastores?

Thank you.

once you switch back to megaraid-sas then need to disable the nativ ones. just in Case i paste:

esxcli system module set --enabled=true --module=megaraid_sas

esxcli system module load --module=megaraid_sas -f

esxcli system module set --enabled=false --module=lsi_mr3

after reboot you could check then with esxcfg-scsidevs -a

if you have any Intel controller and not in use (sata/sas) > good you disable inside the bios.  Just to avoid kinda Interrupts.

may helps.

finger crossed

best regards

The cursor was movable but when I tried to click on my files or any other icons, all seemed frozen. Nothing could be selected. I quit Fusionware and tried again numerous times. I shut down the Mac and restarted. No luck anywhere. I called VM support and I was apparently cut off after 18 months. Can anyone help please? Thanks in advance!

Hello dominikwal

Glad to hear that resolved your initial issue.

"Now that I can't see it anymore"

Do you mean vSAN is not configured on the vSphere cluster Object but is still configured on the node?

If so then it should just be a case of using #esxcli vsan cluster leave  :

No... you cant use it VMs. For sure you place the scratch disk on it because its not supportet so configure it to vSanDatastore.  Maybe you can store your ISOs on.

Hello sandroalvesbrasil,

From a brief search online 'service-datastore' appear to be repository locations for VxRail-related scripts/tools and as staging location for images - these are *likely* VMFS datastores used with excess on install device (as with any standard ESXi install) of insignificant size - step 1 should be to check if they are on the same controller as the vSAN devices, if so then you should not be considering using them for VM storage (logging/coredump/ISOs is generally okay if they are durable devices), step 2 should be to find out if they are of any usable size at all or just VMFs on excess space of install as I said above.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to ask my question, so if not please advise how I can get help.

I am installing VMware-Player version 14 (also tried version 15) and I am using the free version since this is only for personal use.

I am installing the app on Win 10 64 bit PC with more than enough free space.  I double clicked on the app and it seems to install okay but then when I try to open it I get an error message, see below.I would appreciate any help or detailed installtion instructions.

Thank you!

Re: Hardware compatibility/recommendations for vSAN setup

Hello andvm,

"Upon checking PERC H730P Mini, I saw that there was a note on the HCL recommending the HBA330 instead, any thoughts/considerations?"

H730P controllers were physically designed as a cache-backed RAID controller that were kind of slowly shoe-horned into providing a very different purpose which the HBA330 was designed for from the ground-up (passthrough-only, no cache, solid QD, less frills means less hassle) - while H730P with modern driver+firmware are *relatively* more reliable than they have been in the last few years I still wouldn't pick one over a HBA330. Plus they have added caveats e.g. no VMFS even just for logging on same controller as vSAN devices.

"As for the disks, what information is needed to confirm compatibility? (suspect model name is enough and then matching with vSAN guide PDF, see below:)"

Part-numbers can be more specific than Model and are also searchable via the vSAN VCG and/or if vendors list these but not full Model name:

VMware Compatibility Guide - vsan  (click 'Build Your Own based on Certified Components.')

A colleague at GSS also made this which is very useful for quick searches by Model/Vendor/IDs:

https://hcl.captain-vsan.com/

"For all flash is an NVMe at the cache layer and SSD's at the capacity layer the recommended option?"

If the required performance and price-point are justified by the workloads requirements then yes go NVMe if possible - devices such as P4800X are surprisingly good value compared to anything even close to half the performance in an SSD for not massively different prices (other than maybe have to go a bit smaller). One thing to consider is balance with regard to Cache and capacity-tier performance capabilities e.g. putting NVMe in-front of multiple 4TB 7.2k SATA drives wouldn't really do the job much better than lower-end cache-tier certified SSDs of similar size.

"Any other hardware in terms of vSAN compatibility that needs to be checked?"

Nope, other than all other hardware is supported for the version of ESXi in use and your NICs and switches are well-capable of handling the inter-node load (especially if talking bigger All-Flash clusters with features such as RAID5/6, the beefier the network the smoother this will run).

Hello, I had the same error message.

I'm running Mojave (10.14.3) on a 2017 12-inch retina macbook.

My VMWARE fusion version is 11.0.2, and I downloaded it yesterday and just checked for updates.

I noticed a notification that the mac OS had blocked some elements from loading.  Next to this was a button that said something like 'allow'.  Once I clicked this, the issue was resolved.

The notice appeared in the system preferences -> security pane, right under the allow SW from app store / app store + identified devs option.

Hope this helps.

In order to support MacOS Mojave, you need to upgrade Fusion to version 11 as mentioned by this KB article.

VM Hangs on Startup - Windows 10

Hi,

Using 15.0.3 build-12422535 with a Ubuntu 16.04 guest the VM will not start.  Screen is black and the VM appears to be hung.  The last portion of the log always looks like this (see below).   If I remove the NIC (bridged) I can start the VM but of course it then serves no function. However,  once I do this I can re-add the NIC and it will start.  I have to do this just about every time I stop and restart the VM.   I also have a WIndows Server 2012 VM that does the same thing and I just had it happen when trying to create a brand new VM.   I realize that the version of Windows 10 may be responsible since's it's not officially released but if anyone has advice or a more graceful workaround I'd love to hear it.

Issues with Linux VM's & Sound + Screen Resolution

$

I have set up three Linux based Virtual Machines and all three have similar issues.

Linux Mint v19.1

With Linux Mint running, I go to the VM Menu > Settings and/or Removable Devices and enable the Sound Card, but as soon as I try to adjust the sound volume I recieve a small popup error message as displayed in the image. I see this popup error message when starting the VM also.

Untitled-1.png

If I attempt to adjust the settings in the Sound settings in Mint, I recieve the following error message.

Untitled-2.png

VMware tools are installed.

Initially, I had no issues with the Screen Resolution in Linux Mint, but on occasion that must be manually set when I start the VM.

Debian 9.8.0

Same issues with the Sound Card as in Linux Mint.

VMware tools are installed.

Initially, I had no issues with the Screen Resolution in Debian, but on occasion that must be manually set when I start the VM.

There seems to be an issue with the Stop Job message when shutting down Debian though, it is all over the place ... lol

uBuntu v18.04.2 LTS.

VMware tools are installed.

With uBuntu, even though I still recieve the small popup error message, sound will in fact work, but I must manually enable the sound card each time I start the VM, despite having the proper sound settings in the VM settings.

Initially, I had no issues with the Screen Resolution in uBuntu, but on occasion that must be manually set when I start the VM.

I have the following running on:

Asus RAMPAGE V

Intel i7 5930K @ 3.5GHz

16296 MB  (DDR4 SDRAM)

Windows 10 v1809 build 17763.379 running VMware Workstation Pro v15.0.3 build-12422535

The Sound card reports as:

ES1371/ES1373/Creative Labs CT2518 (Audio PCI 64V/128/5200 / Creative CT4810/CT5803/CT5806 [Sound Blaster PCI]

I have tried adding these lines to the .vmx file, but alas, they did not help.

     sound.present = "TRUE"

     sound.fileName = "-1"

     sound.autodetect = "TRUE"

Any hints or tips on resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.
